In short: Jepara is a town on the north coast of Central Java known across Indonesia as Kota Ukir, “the carving city”. It has been a centre of woodcarving and furniture making for centuries, and today thousands of workshops there produce teak furniture for export. Indocasa is a Jepara teak furniture manufacturer: our workshop and showroom are on the Jepara–Kudus road.
A woodworking town with deep roots
Jepara’s reputation for woodcraft goes back centuries. Local tradition credits Queen Kalinyamat, who ruled the coastal kingdom in the 16th century, with encouraging carvers. In the late 19th century Raden Ajeng Kartini, the national heroine born in Jepara, helped bring the town’s carvers to wider attention by promoting their work beyond Java. Over time the skills passed from parent to child, and from workshop to workshop, until furniture making became the backbone of the local economy.
That history matters for one simple reason: skill. Joinery, hand carving and hand finishing are learned over years, not weeks. In Jepara those skills are everywhere, and you can see it in the work.

Close to the teak
Java has managed teak plantations, many of them dating from the colonial era, and Central Java is one of the main growing regions. That puts Jepara workshops close to a steady, traceable supply of mature plantation teak. The port of Tanjung Emas in Semarang is a few hours’ drive away, which makes the town a practical base for exporting by container.
From carving town to design partner
Jepara is famous for ornate carving, but its makers have long since moved beyond it. Many now build clean, contemporary pieces for international brands and hotels. Indocasa was founded on that idea: reinterpret contemporary European design through the craft traditions of Jepara. Our collections are deliberately restrained in outline, and we save the craft for the details: a hand-shaped arm, a perfectly fitted drawer, a top finished by hand.
What to look for in a Jepara teak furniture manufacturer
Jepara has everything from family workshops to large factories, and quality varies. When you compare makers, look for:
- In-house drying. Ask how the timber is dried and to what moisture content. We kiln-dry all our wood in house.
- Design capability. Can they develop and prototype new pieces, or only copy existing ones?
- Finishing standards. Hand finishing makes a visible difference to how a piece feels.
- Export experience. References from hotels or overseas buyers show they can deliver consistently. Ours are on our projects page.
- Legal timber. Indonesian wood exports need SVLK legality documents. See our guide on choosing a teak supplier.
